PlayStation 3 to run Yellow Dog Linux
Published October 20th, 2006 in Technology
It looks like the PlayStation 3 will get a custom version of Yellow Dog Linux. Like most Linux distributions, it will include your standard fare of open source applications, such as Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, and of course, the typical array of development tools. This could be very useful for not only for game developers but also for people who need a large amount of processing power on the cheap. That said, this probably does nothing for people who want to buy the console for it’s primary purpose, and won’t have too much uptake if the price for the Linux distribution is too high (and yes, the price of the PS2 Linux package was way too high). One thing interesting about this is that it uses E17 as the window manager, which has a lot of eye candy, compared to KDE or GNOME’s default window managers, although personally, given that this is the PS3, I’d rather see Compiz running on it than E17, since that’s the cutting edge in terms of Linux window managers when talking straight eye candy.
