US retains control of ICANN

The US has decided to renew it’s ownership of ICANN, the organization responsible for governing domain names. While I’d much rather it be an international body, I suppose this isn’t too bad a deal since they’ve been running it for a long time now and doing a relatively good job of it. As long as the interests of the government and corporations don’t get in the way of the little guy, it’s not a problem.

However, I don’t agree with some of the stupid decisions they made in order to keep a very vocal subset of Americans happy. One example of such a decision would refusing to allow the .xxx domain name for adult websites, which in my opinion would have been a good idea, since it would allow governments and publishers to work to separate those sites from the .com stream, which would decrease the chance of somebody accidentally stumbling upon one.
