New cable modem spec allows for 160Mbps downstream, 120Mbps upstream
Published September 4th, 2006 in TechnologyThat’s right, DOCSIS 3.0 is a cable modem spec allowing for you to have a 100 megabit+ line to your home. Oh wait, did I say “allowing for you”? Sorry, I meant allowing the ISP’s the option of giving you, which, I might add, they’re very unlikely to take. DOCSIS 1.0 allowed for 38Mbps down/10Mbps up and DOCSIS 2.0 allowed for 40Mbps down/30Mbps up. Now when was the last time you saw a cable ISP offering any of those speeds to residential subscribers (or even small business subscribers)? Exactly, never. For example, the ISP I’m with right now caps at 16Mbps down/1Mbps up. And that’s one of the fastest in North America. In addition to the speed issue, there’s also the adoption issue, which apparently won’t even hit 60% until 2011 according to analysts. Well, here’s hoping my ISP decides to roll these upgrades to us soon, and give us at least 50Mbps down/50Mbps up, but that’s wishful thinking.
