Final PS3 development kit released
Published August 21st, 2006 in Gaming, TechnologyIt looks like the final PS3 development kit has been released to developers today. There aren’t too many details available on it at the moment, but apparently the folks at IGN really dug the lightness of the controllers (most likely due to the absence of the rumble feature that was present on the PSX and PS2 consoles. The developer kits also run quietly now, no more howling of fans. The kits have 80GB of hard disk space each, and sport a Blu-ray drive as well. As you can see though, the thing is still pretty big, bigger than a PS2 in fact, which is saying a lot when you consider that the Xbox 360 dev kit is just an Xbox 360 with an extended hard disk (and what better way to develop than on the actual console itself rather than some kit). I suppose as long as it does the job, this probably doesn’t matter, since the average consumer is never going to see one of these anyway, so it’s a moot point. Now that the kit is out to developers, I guess we can expect to see more demos of the PS3’s functionality, so stay tuned.
