Yesterday, while reading Kotaku, I noticed that ALL of usernames displayed in the comments were links rather than just the ones who actually have a website in their profile. So I clicked on one, and found it linked to a new profile page where users with an avatar and a list of their comments in addition to the other profile information that they manually filled out. Sure enough, this was also on Gizmodo, Valleywag, and Consumerist, so it’s a Gawker Media network-wide feature. This is kind of an interesting feature, as it adds a social networking style aspect to the comments. Of course, like anything else, there’s a downside to it as well. Now those of us that do have websites don’t have our links directing to our website anymore, it goes to the Gawker profile instead. (I liked the free publicity dammit!) Oh well, I guess the new system is better overall than what they had (although I wouldn’t mind having a comment signature option).
