Amateur Illustrator is a new social networking website for upcoming artists. Now, before you write this off as a DeviantART clone, it has a number of features DeviantART doesn’t have, including:

  • Interviews: Illustrators can be interviewed by the site administrators and by other members. Interviews done by the site administrators will also be featured on the front page of the site, so it’s a good way for an upcoming artist to get their name out there.
  • Lessons/Tutorials: In addition to just the art itself, artists can write lessions and tutorials to help new artists out with their technique.
  • Illustration of the week: The top illustration of the week is showcased on the front page, based on what the community decides (ratings and pageviews are used to determine the ranking).

When you consider how stale DeviantART has been getting lately in terms of it’s feature set, this competition is definitely welcome. If nothing else, it might make DeviantART update their feature set a bit, and perhaps stop making its users pay to get a large portion of the features.
