YouTube’s new goal: Have every music video ever created
Published August 17th, 2006 in TechnologyYouTube now wants to expand more aggressively into the viral music video market. I guess it’s not happy with the up and coming teens making their own music videos and getting hundreds of thousands of views, which makes up a large portion of the site’s traffic. Now they want actual labels to submit videos to YouTube and agree to a business model with them. From the article:
“What we really want to do is in six to 12 months, maybe 18 months, to have every music video ever created up on YouTube,” co-founder Steve Chen told Reuters. “We’re trying to bring in as much of this content as we can on to the site.”
Well, that’s all well and good. But how do they expect to monetize this at all without alienating users, or stirring up more trouble with the record labels? It will be interesting to see how this develops, to say the least.
