Xbox 360 HD DVD player will be for movies only
Published August 17th, 2006 in Gaming, TechnologyWell, after all the speculation about the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive being used for games, we now have an official answer from John Porcaro at Gamescore (the official Xbox team’s blog). From the article:
I’m seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD DVD games. The answer is no.
Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, we’ve been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD.
This should really not be all that surprising, it would be a stupid idea to use the HD DVD drive for games. We know from past experience that forcing users to purchase expensive new peripherals just to play games causes them to buy neither the peripherals nor the games. Nevertheless, it’s definitely refreshing to know that we won’t have to spend that money to play any Xbox 360 games.
