Google launches free Wi-Fi in Mountain View
Published August 17th, 2006 in TechnologyGoogle has just launched it’s much anticipated free Wi-Fi service in Mountain View, California. It covers 90% of the city’s 12 square miles and has connection speeds of up to 1Mbps. It consists of 380 transceivers (access points) mounted throughout the city, allowing connections of up to 500 feet each. The project cost approximately $1 million. The project is more of an experiment though than an actual service, and Google has claimed they are not planning to become a major wireless ISP.
