The Merit Badge: Facebook releases API to developers
Published August 16th, 2006 in Technology, The Merit BadgeTraditionally, social networking sites have had a fragile business model because of the relative ease at which a social network can be switched. As such, these sites have historically been closed, leaving developers with nothing to work with. Until now that is. Facebook, the college social networking site has just released a public API to developers. Now it is possible to integrate Facebook’s functionality and database into new applications. This definitely will increase innovation around the site, and ultimately will drive them more traffic, since they have a compelling service to offer (look how successful Flickr is with it’s API, for example). For this act, we award Facebook tonight’s Merit Badge.
