Apple may have new Merom (the mobile Core 2 Duo) powered MacBooks and MacBook Pros next month. Asustek (manufacturer of the MacBook) and Quanta (manufacturer of the MacBook Pro) are switching to the 64 bit Merom architecture, according to a report from a chinese language report of the Commercial Times. While this probably isn’t the best sourcing for this piece of news, I tend to believe it, if only for the simple fact that the other PC manufacturers have Merom powered laptops out now, so it’s only a matter of time before Apple does it. If you’re thinking about buying a MacBook now, I’d recommend holding out until the release of the Merom powered ones since it is a 64 bit CPU architecture which will be leveraged in Mac OS X Leopard.
