Thank God I found your post! Saw a re-run of this Futurama episode a few weeks ago, saw the blue key above a door, and that graphic of the key has been driving me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't remember where it was from, but I used to play that game for hours as a kid. I remember that the blue key was always in the same spot in the maze, but the other keys moved around and those dumb dragons would eat you.

Thanks again! Now I can sleep!

[...] Equally entertaining is this YouTube clip found on the Corvillus blpog from the TV show Futurama (via Wonderland). The show’s creators managed to get all the great old arcade gamesd into the show and still have a cohesive plot line! [...]

Rob you are a genius! It is from adventure, I can't tell you how long that has been bugging me. I knew it was from an old old game, and even though the episode commentary refers to doom, thats only the message on the door, not the key itself!
Thanks

Was that blue key reference to Doom or Adventure for the 2600? I don't remember if there was a blue key in Adventure or not.

Some of you are maybe too young to remember Maelstrom. I used to play it on the old Apple IIs at school. I guess they have a version out for OSX now:
