Every time I hear about the PlayStation 3, it seems to have more and more strikes against it. Whether it be the high price, the dropping of originally planned features, or the fact that the hardware seems less likely to live up to the hype Sony put out about it, the console sounds less and less interesting. Take a look at this quote from a GameInformer interview:

GI: What do you like about working on the PS3? How about the Xbox 360? Will there be any major differences between the two versions?

Högdahl: So far the two versions look pretty much the same – quite unsurprisingly, since we use the same shader source code and content for both platforms. They will be identical gameplay-wise. There will only be very minor cosmetic differences, such as the PS3 will have better quality video for the in-game TVs and on the Xbox 360 we have a bit more room for textures in memory.

So there you have it, the PS3 has less texture memory than the Xbox 360, which means that texture quality achievable will likely be lower as well. This certainly doesn’t look good for Sony, who is launching the PS3 at $200 more than the Xbox 360’s price. At this point, I see no compelling reason to buy one when a Wii and an Xbox 360 could be had for the same price.

I don’t know if that’s fair - how much is a bit, and is it really a bad thing?

Anyway, in Sony’s defense, it is a blu-ray player as well, and once the homebrew scene gets their hands on it, the extra CPU cycles could be nice to have.

That said, I’m gonna buy Nintendo’s Wii little console first anyway.
