Facebook Gives Up Private User Information Under the Patriot Act
Published July 13th, 2006 in Technology, World and BusinessNext time you’re on Facebook, you better think twice about putting those incriminating photos of yourself in those inebriated states. You might also want to keep your wall clean of all the jokes and discussion about those parties you’ve been to.
“I’ve set my profile to ‘friends only’, nobody I don’t specifically invite can access that.”, you say confidently. Well, you might not want to keep that confidence up. All it takes now is someone to flag you as a potential terrorist, and Facebook will bend over and give up your full profile details. Once that’s done, whether or not you’re a terrorist, those drunken photos might not look good to prospective employers, and might be just the thing to use against you in the job selection process, as one student found out. So as a general rule, it might not be a good idea to let anything in there you wouldn’t want to see in the general public, seeing as that’s basically how “private” Facebook’s “friends only” system is now.
